A statement from Place2Be on the UK conversion therapy ban

A statement from Place2Be on the UK conversion therapy ban

In the last week, the UK government has announced that it will proceed with a legislative ban on conversion therapy, but that this will only extend to practices aiming to change sexuality and not gender identity.

Place2Be supports a sector-wide Memorandum of Understanding on Conversion Therapy, which states that the practice of conversion therapy, whether in relation to sexual orientation or gender identity, is unethical and potentially harmful.

Catherine Roche, Chief Executive of Place2Be said:

“While it is good news that a ban on conversion therapy will be going ahead in the UK, it is deeply concerning and disappointing that this will not protect transgender people, who we know are significantly at risk of developing mental health issues.

“Young people need safe spaces to be able to discuss their sexuality and gender identity, where they can be themselves without fear of judgement. A complete ban on conversion therapy without loopholes is the only way to achieve this, and eliminate this dangerous practice.”
