Why should I fundraise for Place2Be?

Fundraising for Place2Be means you'll be supporting children and young people's mental health.

How do we help?

Place2Be is the UK’s leading children’s mental health charity providing school-based mental health support services. Our aim is to improve the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people, and our teams work across the UK to give children and young people the resilience and life-long skills they need to thrive.

Through in-school mental health services, training for teachers and support for parents, we empower pupils, staff and families to best support themselves and children and young people.

With your support, we can get closer to reaching a time where no child or young person has to face mental health problems alone.

Want to learn more about streaming?

Whether you already stream or game in your free time, or whether you’re looking to start a new hobby, it’s a great way to fundraise for mental health.

We've got some info and tips below to help get you started.

What is streaming?

Streaming, or live-streaming, is a method of broadcasting video or audio in live-time. A fundraising stream means your activity will be broadcast live to an audience, and has the goal of raising money for a cause you care about.

Streaming is a great way to fundraise because:

  • it's accessible – people from different locations and tune in to watch your stream fundraiser
  • you can fit into your schedule – streaming from where you live means it's easier to find time in your day to do it
  • it's quick and simple for viewers to donate – streaming platforms make it as easy as possible to give money
  • you can plan it easily – after a bit of set-up, you're good to go!

What activities can I stream?

The great thing about livestreaming is you can stream whatever you like doing – you name it, you can stream it! From playing games or music, to baking some treats and doing yoga, you can stream an activity you love doing.

Some popular examples are:

  • playing video games – you could simply just stream you playing your favourite game, or you can switch it up by setting yourself different challenges within the game
  • sharing music – one idea could be to make a playlist and stream your own DJ set, or if you're part of a band or choir you could organise an evening performance and stream it
  • getting active – host your own exercise session, for example yoga, Pilates, or dancing
  • being creative – if you're arty, why try streaming while painting, knitting or doing pottery
  • baking or cooking – you could have a follow-along livestream where your audience can make the treats along with you
  • hosting a quiz – create a quiz and promote it to everyone you know!

How do I get started with streaming?

If you’re new to streaming, we have some handy info to help you get started.

Equipment

  • Computer or laptop – Twitch have a standard of device they recommend you using. If your device doesn’t have these requirements, it’s still worth giving streaming a go because your activity might not require as much computer processing.
  • Internet connection – having a stable internet connection is important to ensure the best experience for you and your audience watching.
  • Webcam – to let your viewers see you, you’ll need a webcam. Some computers or laptops have them built in, or you can buy one to add to your device.
  • Microphone and headset – you can use the microphone built into your device, but if you’d rather have a separate microphone and headset, it can improve the experience for you and your viewers.

Streaming platform

There are a few different streaming platforms you can use, but the most popular ones are:

  • Twitch, a live-streaming service where you can create a channel and build a community around whatever you enjoy doing.
  • YouTube, an online video sharing platform that also offers livestreaming to its users.

If you haven’t already, you’ll need to make an account on your chosen platform before you get started.

Once you’ve made your stream page, customise it by adding some information about yourself, your stream and your fundraiser. Making it more personal to you is a great way to encourage more donations to your fundraiser.

Looking after yourself while streaming

You might like streaming and gaming as a way to unwind or spend time with friends, but it’s important to look after your wellbeing while having fun! We’ve got some top tips to help you look after yourself when streaming or gaming.

Playing games and streaming can have a really positive impact on your wellbeing, but there are times when they might start to have a negative impact on your mental health.

Gaming or streaming can help improve our mental wellbeing by providing the opportunity to do things like:

  • spend time socialising and chatting with friends or family
  • learn new skills or hobbies
  • relax, unwind and de-stress.

It’s important to keep in mind that doing it too much can be harmful for your wellbeing, and it’s possible to become addicted to gaming. For example, gaming might be impacting your social life, sleep, or your work at school, university or your job. This can be a sign that gaming is having more of a negative impact on you than a positive one.

If you’d like to take better care of yourself when gaming or streaming, we have some helpful tips to create healthier habits.

  • Take regular breaks – schedule in a few breaks during the time you’re gaming or your stream. Moving around or getting outside will make sure you’re not sitting still for too long.
  • Set a time limit – decide how long you want to game or stream that day and stick to it. You could have an alarm to remind you to stop.
  • Consider the time of day you’re gaming or streaming – keep in mind that cutting down on screen time before you go to sleep can improve the quality of your sleep.
  • Continue doing other activities – fit in your gaming or streaming around your other hobbies and commitments.

Keeping yourself safe online is important when streaming or watching someone else stream.

  • Check your privacy settings – making your profile more private means fewer people can see your information. Be mindful of how much personal information you put on your profile.
  • Report negative messages or comments – if you notice people bullying or making negative comments during your stream, you can mute, block and delete them.
